The United States is on pace to surpass 5 billion gallons of biodiesel and renewable diesel consumption for the first time, according to Clean Fuels Alliance America.

In 2024, a push to adopt alternative fuels and upgrades to technical standards have set up the industry for growth in the rail, aviation, marine and heavy-duty transportation industries.

“Consumers and corporations are demanding more clean fuel, and they are increasingly turning to biodiesel and renewable diesel to meet those demands,” said Clean Fuels Alliance America CEO Donnell Rehagen in a press release. “Our industry has become a central force in the global effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions.”

An example of growing biodiesel fuel use in the rail sector is rail technology company Wabtec, which has tested and conditionally approved B20 biodiesel blends for its locomotive engines.

States’ policies in 2024 also helped to grow clean fuel use, the alliance says. New Mexico became the fourth state to implement a clean transportation fuel standard.

Meanwhile, Nebraska expanded its retail biodiesel program and became the latest state to pass incentives for the in-state production of sustainable aviation field.

Biodiesel and renewable diesel usage also grew under California’s low-carbon fuel standard, making up 75% of the state’s diesel fuel supply. And Iowa reached a record of 486.5 million gallons of biodiesel sales in 2023, nearly triple the volume recorded in 2007, according to the alliance.
