Union Tank Car achieves ACC's Responsible Care Partner status

Union Tank Car Co. recently became an official American Chemistry Council (ACC) Responsible Care Partner — the first rail-car builder, lessor or repair firm to earn ACC's partner status.

As a partner, Union Tank Car is required to follow best practices and protocols designed to improve chemical handling. Responsible Care addresses 106 management practices, from providing adequate employee emergency-response training to establishing procedures for safe chemical handling at all plant and repair facilities.

Dow Chemical Co. and Vulcan Chemicals sponsored Union Tank Car's partnership: "We wanted to be a Responsible Care Partner because we work with some chemicals that pose potential hazards in the lining, coating, cleaning and repair of rail cars at our shops," said Mary Dinkel, Union Tank Car director of environment, safety and health, and Responsible Care coordinator, in a prepared statement, adding that the chemical industry forms a large part of the company's customer base.

Union Tank Car plans to more efficiently process tank-car paints and interior coatings, and break down by-products into their component chemicals for possible re-use in other applications.
