Union coalition temporarily suspends retirement bill lobbying

The Railroad Retirement Coalition of Rail Labor Unions Sept. 14 temporarily suspended for 10 days all lobbying tied to passage of S. 697 — Railroad Retirement and Survivors' Improvement Act of 2001 — in light of terrorist attacks Sept. 11.

Coalition officials asked Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Grand International Auxiliary members to refrain from contacting Senators to enable Congress to take care of the nation's more pressing tragedy-related needs.

Union officials plan to notify members when the coalition will resume its lobbying effort.

The House July 31 overwhelmingly passed sister bill H.R. 1140; S. 697 currently has 71 co-sponsors.
