• Ansaldo STS - Union Switch & Signal (US&S) won a $13.9 million contract from the Toronto Transit Commission to design, supply and install a new wayside signaling system for the South Yonge project area of the Yonge-University-Spadina Line, Toronto's oldest subway line. The project area is divided into three interlocking zones, and includes 15 stations and portions of Davisville Yard. Ansaldo STS - US&S will supply its MicroLok® II-based Seamless Redundant Interlocking System for interlocking control and AF-900 series audio frequency track circuit for train detection for all mainline track, except over-switch. The company's MicroLok® Object Controller will distribute vital input/output control to field locations, reducing the amount of required trackside cabling.

• Knorr-Bremse has acquired Hübner GmbH's rail vehicle door division. The deal is expected to close January 1, 2009. Knorr-Bremse will continue to offer Hübner products for the duration of existing contractual projects, and fulfill all the company's service and spare parts supply obligations.

• Sweco obtained a project management contract for the expansion of the Helsinki Metro subway system, which will link the cities of Helsinki and Espoo, Finland. Scheduled to be completed at 2013's end, the project calls for building an eight-mile subway section with eight stations.

• German rail operator Deutsche Bahn named Alstom Transport its supplier of the year in a rolling stock category — the third time Alstom has won the award since the category was created in 2003. The award recognizes a supplier's reliability, responsiveness, contractual commitment, cost reduction and process improvements, as well as understanding customer goals and expectations. Alstom obtained the honor for manufacturing and delivering 27 Coradia LINT regional trains for Deutsche Bahn. All the trains will be placed service by year's end.

• Lake State Railroad Co. (LSRC) has incorporated RailComm Inc.'s Track Warrant Control functionality into its existing Domain Operations Controller System (DOC®). During the past two years, LSRC has dispatched trains within Centralized Traffic Control territory by using the DOC® control system. The Track Warrant Control module provides the railroad an integrated view of all train traffic within the territory.

• Bird-X Inc. named Dave Kogan marketing manager. He has more than 12 years' experience in the marketing field and recently developed a public relations program for Bird-X, which offers bird and animal pest-control services to the rail industry.

• Engineering firm Parsons Brinckerhoff appointed Peter Allibone senior engineering manager. He has 40 year's experience in rail and transit engineering, and most recently managed the northeast region for a national transit consulting firm. Allibone previously was deputy director of MTA New York City Transit's track and structures department.

• For the third consecutive year, engineering firm J.L. Patterson & Associates Inc. received a top ranking on CE News' "Best Civil Engineering Firms to Work For" list. J.L. Patterson moved from 11th place last year to 4th place this year among all U.S. firms, and from 4th to 3rd among small firms.
