Here are seven recent developments in the rail supply/service industry:

• Atlantic Track & Turnout Co. and ThyssenKrupp GfT Gleistechnik GmbH formed MRT Track & Services Co. Inc., a joint venture firm focused on the U.S. mass rapid-transit market, including metros, light rail and airport connections. The joint venture partners named William Roan Jr. president and Amir Joneidi, vice president of MRT, which will be based in Bloomfield, N.J.

• Dutch firm BAM Rail bv and German company RAIL.ONE reached an agreement to develop and construct advanced, high-performance ballast-less rail infrastructure for heavy rail in the Netherlands. BAM Rail will manage construction work and required technical equipment/staffing; RAIL.ONE will be responsible for the design and development of railway technology, and concrete tie delivery. Both companies will be responsible for project management, development and modification of construction machinery, and site supervision.

• Siemens plc expects to deliver the first five of 60 new Velaro high-speed trains to China in August in time for the Summer Olympic Games. In addition, the first of 57 trainsets manufactured by Siemens' partner Tangshan Locomotive & Rolling Stock Works in China will go into service in early April. By year's end, Siemens also expects to deliver the first of eight Velaro trains to Russia from a Krefeld, Germany, plant.

• China Architectural Engineering Inc. won a $50 million contract to build external envelopes for eight of 23 stations on the Dubai Metro System's new Red Line. The firm will build entranceways, walkways, bridges and parking lots. Work on the Dubai line is expected to conclude in second-quarter 2009.

• MHF Logistical Solutions Inc. named Shane Frazier business development manager of vertical and industrial commodities. He most recently was manager of logistics and operations for cotton supplier Cargill Cotton. Frazier previously held various sales and marketing positions at Union Pacific Railroad and was a corporate management trainee for BNSF Railway Co. MHF provides logistics services — including rail — for radioactive, hazardous and non-hazardous waste and materials.

• Titan Worldwide won a 10-year contract to sell advertising for Bay Area Rapid Transit. Titan will handle a mix of media at 43 stations and add new advertising products, such as station bulletins with floor graphics, cross-track wallscapes, turnstile wrappers and a network of digital products.

• The GBS Group obtained a contract from an undisclosed U.S. passenger railroad to provide engineering services and custom software applications for a new locomotive health monitoring system. The custom software includes the Maintenance Events Analysis Program (MEAP™) designed to monitor electric fleet equipment in real time and issue wireless alerts.
