• Balfour Beatty Rail Inc.'s Transit division obtained two work orders from the Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver. The combined value of the orders — the first two under an on-call services contract with RTD — exceeds $16 million. Under an $8.8 million order, the division will upgrade a power system, including the furnishing, installation, testing and commissioning of three 1.5-megawatt traction power substations. Under an $8 million order, the division will commission one 3-megawatt substation, and install, test and commission one RTD-furnished 1.5-megawatt substation at Elati North Yard.  All work is scheduled to be complete by Oct. 31, 2010.

• A Thales/Dimetronic Signals consortium won a contract from Spanish national rail infrastructure company Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias to provide rail signaling, European Train Control Systems (ETCS) and maintenance services on a route between Barcelona and Figueras. The consortium also will supply fixed telecommunication systems, including fiber-optic cables, and data and voice transmission and switching. Thales will design, install and maintain the ETCS levels 1 and 2, including four radio blocking centers with intermediary control points, track circuits, wheel sensors and auxiliary systems.

• D. A. International Casting Co./WINE Railcar Products named Jerry Solt vice president of sales and marketing. He has more than 25 years of experience in the sales and marketing of industrial, railroad and transit products. Solt held various sales and marketing positions with Wabtec Corp. and Buckeye Steel Castings Co. D. A. International Casting/WINE Railcar Products provides wine door, rapid release-automatic door and rapid release-manual door systems.

• CIT Rail appointed Steve Nielsen vice president of railcar leasing. He will be responsible for account development and management in the Mid-Atlantic and Eastern region. For the past 18 years, Nielsen served Union Pacific Railroad in various capacities, most recently as senior business manager, marketing and sales for the northeast.

• Pacer International Inc. announced that Robert Grassi will join its board on March 1. He retired as president and chief executive officer of CSX World Terminals in 2003, and now serves as a management and financial consultant. Grassi previously held senior management positions with Sea-Land Service Inc. for 22 years, last serving as senior vice president and chief financial officer.
