• Bombardier Transportation obtained a contract from French national railway SNCF to design and manufacture up to 860 double-deck electrical multiple units. The contract could total $11 billion if all options are exercised. SNCF has signed a firm order for 80 trains valued at about $1.1 billion.

• The city of Austin, Texas, awarded a contract to a Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam (LAN) Inc./AECOM joint venture to provide preliminary engineering services for its proposed urban rail project. The streetcar/light-rail hybrid system would stretch from the Mueller development to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and connect the University of Texas, Texas State Capitol complex and Austin’s central business district. LAN and AECOM will be responsible for developing preliminary engineering plans that identify right of way, environmental mitigation measures, staging plans for construction and a capital cost estimate.

• AECOM obtained a design-services contract from MTR Corp. Ltd., which owns and operates the Hong Kong MTR metro system. As part of the Hong Kong Shatin-to-Central Link project, AECOM will design a new interchange station and semi-underground train-stabling facility, as well as upgrade an existing rail depot and footbridge network. The Shatin-to-Central Link project will provide a new rail connection between Hong Kong’s New Territories and its central business district.

• RailComm will supply its GCOR dispatch system to Genesee and Wyoming Inc.’s New York and Pennsylvania and Ohio Central railroads. The system will enable the railroads to access RailComm’s Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) train control system through a Web-enabled software-as-a-service delivery model. Genesee and Wyoming will be able to remotely dispatch the trains anywhere an Internet connection is available, according to RailComm.

• Technology provider and strategic consulting firm Ricardo recently appointed Simon Scott global rail market sector director to help “take its rail business to the next level,” according to the company. He previously served as engineering technical director of rail for Atkins, where he was responsible for a range of engineering innovation programs. Scott also held a number of positions with Metronet Rail, where he worked with the London Underground network, including a post as head of fleet, signals, power and depots whole life asset management.
