• GATX Corp. named Al Smith vice president and executive director of the company’s locomotive group. Smith has led the commercial efforts within the locomotive group for the past 11 years, and has managed the business' mechanical and administrative aspects.

• Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. (EMD) has established warehouse operations in China to support their growing fleet of 6,000-horsepower diesel locomotives. The warehouses are located in the northeast section of China, close to customer maintenance operations, according to EMD.

• Spectrum Infrared, a manufacturer of track switch heaters, has named Jay Peet vice president. He will be responsible for market development, product development, resource allocation and employee relations. Previously, Peet held management positions in the residential building industry. The company also named Joel Hoffman sales manager. He will oversee all sales efforts and build customer relations. Hoffman previously held various sales roles in the residential building industry.

• Amsted Rail’s ASF-Keystone spring operation has received Bronze Level Supplier Quality Excellence Process certification from Caterpillar Inc. Amsted received the award for providing Caterpillar with the "highest levels of products, quality and service," according to a prepared statement.

• Law firm Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker is offering its services to rail clients to help them apply for Federal Railroad Administration grants to install positive train control.

• FreightCar America Inc. announced that Larry Marx died March 29. He was 58. An employee for 33 years, Marx most recently was area manager for quality in Danville, Ill. Before that, he worked as a quality supervisor in Johnstown, Pa.
