Updates from GE, Trinity Industries, Portec Rail, HJ Skelton and HDR

• GE Transportation announced it delivered and equipped six LOCOTROL® remote-control locomotive (RCL) systems at CN’s Johnson Yard in Memphis, Tenn. LOCOTROL RCL is designed to help decrease yard movements and improve interchange management for increased network velocity. GE has installed more than 300 of the systems for seven railroads in North America and Europe. Meanwhile, GE Global Research and SandLinks Inc. have developed a Total Asset Visibility system designed to track asset location and condition in transit. The system integrates GE’s VeriWise™ asset tracking service and SandLinks’ Ultra Wide Band RFID technology. GE’s telematics systems can track the location and status of rail cars, trailers, trucks, fleet vehicles and other high-value assets.

• Trinity Industries Inc. reported first-quarter net income of $33.9 million compared with $63.8 million in first-quarter 2008. Revenue totaled $793.5 million vs. $898.9 million in the year-earlier period. During the quarter, TrinityRail® delivered 3,050 rail cars and received orders for 995 cars. As of March 31, TrinityRail’s order backlog totaled 6,210 cars valued at about $550 million. Trinity Industries Leasing Co.’s fleet stood at 47,650 cars vs. 38,030 cars on March 31, 2008. The lease fleet’s utilization rate was 98.4 percent.

• Portec Rail Products Inc. reported unaudited first-quarter net income of $1.1 million compared with $1.3 million in first-quarter 2008. Net sales fell from $24.8 million in the year-ago period to $22.2 million.

• HJ Skelton (Canada) Ltd. obtained a contract from the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas, to provide eight Unistar CSV-24 Contec powered switch machines after an extended testing period. The waterproof, stainless-steel units are designed to work reliably in all weather conditions.

• HDR Vice President and Senior Project Manager Kurt Reichelt has been elected to serve on the Association of American Railroads Associate Advisory Board’s Intermodal Operations Committee. Reichelt has extensive experience with feasibility studies, railroad relocation and federally funded projects, and industrial and intermodal facility planning. Prior to joining HDR, he spent 13 years in various railroad operations posts for BNSF Railway Co., including engineering, transportation and intermodal positions.
