• Indiana Harbor Belt Railway Co. has implemented MaxAccel's SafeTrack™ software to manage Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)-compliance recordkeeping and reporting requirements. The Web-based software can track all safety training and operations testing activities, and manage calendar-based certification requirements and related employee information. Required FRA reports now are generated instantly, saving the railroad time and effort, and can be printed or saved for retention or distribution, MaxAccel said.

• Ansaldo STS subsidiary Ansaldo STS USA won a $25.8 million contract from MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) for the Harold and Point Central Instrument Location Interlocking project. Part of LIRR’s East Side Access program, the project calls for replacing the current vital relay-based interlocking control system with a MicroLok® II vital microprocessor-based system.

• Invensys Rail Group has appointed Jesus Guzman managing director of subsidiary Spanish Dimetronic Signals, which provides rail signaling systems and services throughout Europe. Guzman has served Invensys Rail the past six years and has held various senior positions in research and development, engineering and marketing. He most recently led Dimetronic’s day-to-day operations under the guidance of outgoing Managing Director Carlos Monzano, who will remain with the company as an advisor until he retires on Oct. 31.

• SafeRack L.L.C. recently installed a SafeRack G4 Series gangway-and-platform system at a rail-car unloading area for Asphalt Refining & Technology Co. in Douglasville, Ga. The G4 Series system features spring-loaded gangway and platform operation, slip-resistant stair treads, powder-coated handrails and mid-rails, and a four-rail design for maximum fall protection and easier operation, SafeRack said.

• e-VERIFILE.COM Inc. announced Finger Lakes Railway Corp. will use its Web-based e-RAILSAFE Short Line service, which is designed to help regionals and short lines with workplace safety/security management. Finger Lakes, which provides freight and passenger excursion services in central New York's Finger Lakes region, will use e-RAILSAFE Short Line to better manage routine tasks, such as personnel screening, resource management, safety awareness/compliance, and workforce credentialing. e-RAILSAFE Short Line is based on e-VERIFILE.COM’s e-RAILSAFE service for Class Is.

• RailComm Inc. will provide a wireless remote-control switch heater system for JFK Airport’s Air Train in New York City. The turnkey control system will include RailComm’s switch heater controllers that communicate to a central office via a dedicated data radio network. RailComm’s Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) System will reside in the central office and provide the operator with a user interface to control the 20 switch heaters.

• Railpower Technologies Corp. announced a Quebec Superior Court issued an order to extend the company’s period of protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act until May 20, during which time creditors and other third parties continue to be stayed from taking steps against Railpower. The court also relieved the company of any obligation to schedule and hold an annual shareholders meeting on or before June 30, and extended the delay for calling and holding such a meeting to on or before Sept. 30.

• Engineering firm J.L. Patterson & Associates Inc. has won a 2008 Construction Management Project Achievement Award for Best Transportation Project for its work on BNSF Railway Co.’s Cajon Pass third-main track project in California. The firm provided design, engineering and construction management services to BNSF for the installation of 16 miles of track through the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County.
