• RailComm has been selected by Union Pacific Railroad to provide a wireless remote control yard system at Englewood Yard in Houston. The Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) system is designed to provide remote control to several GE Transportation Systems HydraSwitch machines. The system will be configured to control all switches individually and provide eNtrance eXit routing functionality, according to RailComm.

• Schindler Elevator Corp. won a contract with an initial value of $24 million and options for a total value up to $70 million from New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Co. to provide and install elevators and escalators for the East Side Access project that will connect MTA Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Terminal. The contract includes options for the installation and maintenance of up to 22 elevators, including eight traction and 14 hydraulic units and 47 escalators, 17 of which will be 91.5 feet high and more than six stories tall.

• Steel Dynamics Inc. announced its standard strength rail produced at a Columbia City, Ind., mill has been tested and approved by four U.S. Class Is and Amtrak. The Class Is are BNSF Railway Co., CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

• Axion International Inc., which produces recycled, composite plastic crossties, has appointed Steven Silverman president and chief executive officer. He most recently was executive vice president for Archbrook Laguna L.L.C., a private supply-chain services provider.

• Parsons Brinckerhoff named W. Stephen Dale assistant general counsel for litigation. He will focus on the management and resolution of litigation involving the company. Previously, Dale was a partner in SmithPachterMcWhorter P.L.C., a Vienna, Va., law firm.
