• Siemens and Russian locomotive builder OJSC Sinara Transport Machines signed an agreement with the Russian Railways to provide about 100 electric double locomotives annually, beginning in 2010. The units will be produced at a jointly operated plant located near Yekaterinburg. The pact’s details will be finalized in the next few weeks, Siemens said.

• Loram Maintenance of Way Inc. recently received the 2009 Minnesota Governor’s International Trade Award, one of seven companies to obtain the honor. The awards recognize companies’ efforts to develop and continue to grow a significant part of their business in foreign markets; to increase or maintain jobs in Minnesota that support international sales; and to develop “novel” approaches for competing globally. Loram’s international sales have increased from 24 percent of revenue in 2006 to 31 percent of revenue in 2008. The supplier now serves customers in more than 30 countries.

• Schneider National has introduced an “Eastern Core Intermodal Service” with its exclusive eastern carrier CSX Intermodal that aims to provide an alternative to over-the-road transport with “truck-like expediency” and a lower cost compared with traditional van/truckload solutions, Schneider National said. The service will offer reliability competitive with over-the-road carriers and real-time monitoring of door-to-door shipments.

• Knorr-Bremse is building a new rail vehicle systems plant in Budapest, Hungary, to replace an older facility. To be completed in spring 2010, the plant will produce various bogie equipment for rail vehicles, including brake caliper units, block brakes and brake control components.

• The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority recently awarded a $1.2 million contract to ProTran1 L.L.C. to provide more than 1,800 safety awareness devices for transit workers.

• Harsco Corp. named Joseph Dougherty vice president of international sales for the Harsco Rail group, effective June 1. He most recently was strategic marketing manager for GE Transportation’s global locomotive business. Dougherty previously served as a global product line manager for GE, and global project management consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

• Third-party logistics provider Kenco Logistic Services L.L.C. has selected James Street Associates as its media relations agency. James Street will be responsible for expanding and strengthening the awareness of Kenco’s services among current and prospective customers.

• Invensys Rail Group reported that, during its latest fiscal year, the company increased orders by 109 percent; operating profit by 32 percent; and its operating margin by 21.1 percent.
