• Metro Warszawskie Sp. z o.o., Warsaw's metro operator, has placed a $369 million order for 35 six-car trains with Siemens AG, the company’s biggest order in Poland, according to Siemens. The order for the new "Inspiro" metro generation was placed with a consortium comprising Siemens and Newag, a Polish rolling stock manufacturer. Fifteen trains will be used on the first metro line and 20 trains will run on the second line, now under construction. An option for a later extension of the second line would call for 17 additional trains within the next three years.

• Nordco Inc. has appointed Bob Coakley director of sales and marketing. He previously worked in sales and marketing at Dapco Industries, which is owned by Nordco. Nordco also appointed Greg Spilker to focus solely on sales of Nordco's MOW products and services, including new and rebuilt equipment and parts.

• Axion International has obtained a $15 million contract from an undisclosed Class I to provide composite ties made of recycled plastic. The contract represents a milestone for the company, Axion President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Silverman said in a prepared statement. "This contract represents our first sizable order in the domestic rail tie market," he said. The ties will be produced from a proprietary product made of 100 percent plastic and will replace aging wood ties.

• Bombardier Transportation has awarded a contract to Envitech Energy Inc. for three traction power substations as part of the King Abdullah Financial District Monorail project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Envitech Energy will be responsible for the design, manufacturing and commissioning of the main components of the traction power substation: transformer, rectifier, DC switchgear, battery charger, automatic grounding switch and wayside braking energy system.

• Getzner Werkstoffe has been commissioned to provide vibration protection solutions for the upgrade of the Berlin-Cottbus rail link. The Austrian company is supplying sleeper pads featuring a specially designed polyurethane layer for the Deutsche Bahn project. Upon completion, the track section will be able to handle speeds of up to 99 mph without generating additional vibrations. The contract is valued at about $2.5 million.

• Parsons Brinckerhoff recently named Victoria Cross Kelly strategic operations manager for the Northeast region. She will be responsible for managing the engineering consulting firm's development, coordination and pursuit of strategic interests. Prior to joining the firm, Kelly spent 30 years at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. The firm also has appointed Stefano Viggiano, planning manager in the Portland, Ore., office. He has more than 30 years of experience as a senior manager with the Lane Transit District in Eugene, Ore.
