Value of goods shipped between U.S., neighboring nations climbs again in April, BTS says

In April, the value of trade moved via surface transportation modes between the United States and Canada and Mexico totaled $65.8 billion, up 32.4 percent compared with April 2009’s level, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). April marked the third consecutive month with a year-over-year gain of at least 24 percent.
U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaling $39.9 billion rose 32.1 percent and U.S.-Mexico surface transportation trade totaling $25.9 billion increased 32.8 percent. The value of import and export goods railed between the United States and two NAFTA nations in April rose 58.8 percent to $7.2 billion and 42.7 percent to $4 billion, respectively, compared with April 2009 figures.
The value of U.S.-Canada import and export goods moved via rail jumped 62.2 percent to $4.9 billion and 40.9 percent to $2.3 billion, respectively; and the value of U.S.-Mexico import and export goods moved via rail soared 52.1 percent to $2.3 billion and 45.3 percent to $1.7 billion, respectively.
