Vancouver port's 2010 cargo volume climbed to record-setting mark

In 2010, Port Metro Vancouver handled 118.4 million tons of cargo, up 16 percent compared with 2009 volume.
Container traffic set a record at 2.5 million 20-foot-equivalent units, up 17 percent year over year, while overall export volume surged because of record-setting coal and grain traffic, according to the port. Total foreign tonnage rose 18 percent to 93.3 million tons and total domestic tonnage climbed 10 percent to 25.1 million tons.
Auto volume dipped 1 percent to 381,609 units and bulk volume rose 19 percent to a record at 80.3 million tons “as a result of sustained growth in Asian economies and strong demand for Canadian commodities, like coal, grain and potash,” port officials said in a prepared statement.
In 2010, the port — which is served by CN and Canadian Pacific — also reached its first collaboration agreement with CN and addressed capacity by boosting Deltaport’s container capacity and launching construction on the Lynn Creek/Brooksbank rail underpass project.
