Vermont Railway to offer Chicago-to-West Coast trailer service

In July, Vermont Railway Intermodal Group plans to begin offering Golden Prairie Service, a 53-foot-trailer service between Chicago and Los Angeles.

Available six days a week, the service would be marketed to intermodal marketing companies and motor carriers, offering use of the 325-mile short line's VIPZ trailer fleet.

The service targets traditional intermodal users and over-the-road (OTR) operators who've been reluctant to use intermodal, according to a prepared statement.

"Our 53-foot equipment is something OTR carriers are used to and shippers are familiar with," said Eric Moffett, intermodal group vice president.

Citing the business-generating success of 53-foot trailer services recently introduced by CSX Intermodal and Florida East Coast Railway, Vermont Railway officials said Golden Prairie Service will expand the short line's intermodal-account reach to the West Coast.

"The intermodal trailer is still a significant asset in attracting new business," said Moffett.
