Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

Virginia to pony up $1.3 million for shippers' freight-rail projects

On Wednesday, the Commonwealth Transportation Board authorized the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation to provide more than $1.3 million to several shippers for three freight-rail access projects.

The department will grant:
• $450,000 to Railside Industries Inc., Houff Feed and Fertilizer Co. Inc. and IDM Trucking Inc. to access freight rail at a transloading and storage facility for highway deicing salts, oils and fertilizers in Augusta County;
• $450,000 to Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative Inc. to access freight rail at a new turkey feed ingredient transloading facility in Rockingham County; and
• $425,000 to Quality Culvert Inc. to access a freight-rail line at a new corrugated plastic drainage pipe facility in Greensville County.

The projects are scheduled to be completed within 24 months.
