The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation recently issued a notice to proceed to Washington Group International Inc. and Bechtel Infrastructure Corp. joint venture Dulles Transit Partners L.L.C. to begin preliminary engineering for the first phase of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project.

The project’s first phase will extend Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Metrorail system 11 miles from the East Falls Church station to Wiehle Avenue near Reston, Va. The entire project will extend Metrorail service 23 miles to Washington Dulles International Airport.

Preliminary engineering is expected to be complete in October 2005.

On July 22, FTA granted $59 million to the department to begin engineering work on the project’s first phase.
