Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Last month, the Federal Transit Administration gave Virginia’s Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) the green light to begin final design for the Norfolk Light Rail Project.
Scheduled to be completed in late 2009 or early 2010, the 7.4-mile line would run from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center through downtown Norfolk along the Interstate 264 corridor. The line will include 11 stations and serve Norfolk State University, Harbor Park, City Hall, MacArthur Center, Tidewater Community College’s Norfolk campus, and the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. HRT projects 12,000 people would use the system daily.
The agency anticipates the FTA will award a $128 million Full Funding Grant Agreement for the $232.1 million project next year.
