WMATA hires firm to help reduce energy costs

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently enlisted Pepco Energy Services to evaluate at least five facilities to determine ways to reduce energy costs.

Under the 10-year contract, terms for which weren't disclosed, Pepco Energy Services would design and install new lighting and heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems and water conservation measures.

After an initial assessment, Pepco estimated WMATA could save at least $4 million a year in energy costs systemwide if upgrades were made to lighting, heating, cooling and other energy-consuming systems in the agency's buildings, maintenance facilities, garages and stations.

WMATA currently spends $26 million a year for electricity at its facilities.

“We will begin saving as soon as the first light fixture is replaced,” said WMATA Chief Financial Officer Charles Woodruff in a prepared statement.
