Yesterday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) unveiled an elevator and escalator training facility in Landover, Md.

The $1.5 million facility will support WMATA’s escalator and elevator apprenticeship program, and serve as an ongoing training center for escalator and elevator mechanics. Eventually, local fire, police and emergency response departments will use the facility to conduct rescue exercises and training programs.

WMATA has 588 escalators and 267 elevators system-wide.
