Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Last month, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) posted record Metrorail ridership at 18,556,046 passengers. The agency previously set a record in April, when Metrorail recorded 17,863,153 passenger trips.
Authority officials attribute the increase to passengers attending Washington Nationals’ baseball games.
During fiscal-year 2005, which ended June 30, WMATA carried 195,186,512 passengers — a 2.7 percent rise compared with FY2004 and the ninth-consecutive year of annual ridership increases.
