Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) had yet another record-breaking year in the ridership department. During fiscal-year 2007, which ended June 30, the authority carried 207.9 million rail passengers, marking the 11th-consecutive year ridership has increased and the second time the authority has surpassed the 200-million passenger mark in a single year. And, average weekday ridership totaled 702,171, the first time average weekday ridership topped 700,000.
The authority carried 1.1 percent, or 2 million, more rail passengers in FY2007 than FY2006.
In addition, WMATA posted record monthly ridership in June, carrying 19 million passengers and an average of 772,826 riders each weekday. The previous all-time monthly high was recorded in June 2006, when WMATA carried 18.7 million passengers and averaged 747,329 weekday riders. Also in June, WMATA posted seven “Top 10” ridership days. Authority officials attribute the busy month to an influx of visitors, Washington Nationals’ baseball games and high gas prices.
