WMATA to add more bomb-resistant receptacles at stations

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently approved spending $800,000 to purchase and install between 250 and 300 bomb-resistant trash receptacles.

The authority expects to begin installing the receptacles on Metrorail platforms this summer and complete installation by year end.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, WMATA removed all trash receptacles from platforms. In 2002, the authority installed 400 bomb-resistant trash cans at Metrorail stations.
