advertisement
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officials have decided to continue funding an escalator and elevator overhaul program.
Last week, the board approved one-year contract extensions to maintain 368 escalators and 100 elevators. The contracts cover additional labor costs to repair equipment at night. By 2010, WMATA expects to rehabilitate 413 escalators and 95 elevators.
Since the rehabilitation project began in 2000, WMATA crews have rehabilitated 152 of the system’s 588 escalators.
