Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officials recently approved a plan to add SmarTrip technology to 98 ticket vending machines during the next year.
The fare-collection technology enables customers to add value to fare cards using credit or debit cards. Currently, more than 15,000 customers use credit or debit cards at SmarTrip vending machines daily. The number of transactions has increased significantly since late last year, when WMATA began using SmarTrip cards as the only payment option in parking lots, according to a prepared statement.
The authority will spend $3.5 million to add SmarTrip technology to 43 fare machines immediately; 55 machines will be retrofitted later this year.
