WMATA to obtain federal funds for FY2005 projects

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will receive more than $100 million in federal funds from the fiscal-year 2005 U.S. Department of Transportation appropriation bill.

Part of the omnibus package approved last weekend by Congress, the bill includes $76.8 million for WMATA’s Blue Line extension from Addison Road to Largo Town Center and $25 million for the Dulles Corridor rapid transit project, which would extend the authority’s service to Washington Dulles International Airport.

The state of Maryland is providing the remaining funds for the Blue Line extension, which is scheduled to open next month. Funding for the Dulles project — which is currently in the preliminary engineering stage — will be provided by federal, state and local sources, including a special tax assessment on commercial properties along the corridor.
