Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently contracted ALSTOM to upgrade automatic train control systems (ATC) on 556 passenger cars and install the system in 184 new cars.
The passenger-car builder has designed a relay board and upgraded station stopping software to help WMATA solve some ATC problems that currently delay trains, such as passenger car door openings, station overruns, and reduced train speed and movement.
The equipment upgrade will improve WMATA’s mean distance between failure from 41,700 miles to at least 56,000 miles by year end, authority officials believe.
The authority plans to test the new system later this month.
