Wabtec Corp.’s United Kingdom subsidiary Vapor-Stone recently obtained a $22 million contract to overhaul door systems, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for London Underground subway cars.

The contract is part of an overhaul program being conducted by Metronet Rail — which is upgrading two-thirds of the subway system — for cars that operate on the Central Line.

Vapor-Stone expects to complete the project in 2005.

"Our goal is to achieve 24-hour turnaround times, which will be a significant accomplishment," said Anthony Walsh, managing director of Vapor-Stone, in a prepared statement. "To meet that goal, we will pull two cars at a time out of service, overhaul and re-install their equipment, and return the cars into service within 24 hours."
