The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently awarded two grants totaling more than $1.8 million to the Washington State Department of Transportation to help fund grade crossing upgrades and rail infrastructure improvements.

The DOT will use a $1.49 million grant to fund improvements in Tacoma Rail's Mountain Division, such as upgrading four bridges and repairing rail, crossties and equipment at several crossings between Tacoma and Morton.

The FRA also will provide a $360,943 grant, which the DOT will use to help fund the Olympia Infrastructure Enhancement Project. The proceeds will fund crossing improvements at the Port of Olympia marine terminal, including the installation of safety gates and cantilevered warning lights, and replacement of rail and ties. The DOT will provide an additional $90,236 for Market Street crossing improvements.
