The Watco Cos. Inc. recently received two awards from the Pittsburg, Kan., Chamber of Commerce. Watco’s late founder Dick Webb obtained the Spirit of Pittsburg honor posthumously and the company won the Pittsburg Employer of the Year Award.
The chamber bestows the Spirit of Pittsburg award to recognize an individual who helps make the city a better place to live. Webb’s wife of more than 50 years, Kaye Lynne, accepted the award on his behalf.
Webb’s vision of “taking care of his team so that they can take care of the customers” was the basis for Watco’s employer of the year honor, according to a prepared statement. Watco employs more than 170 people at a Pittsburg-area customer support center and more than 2,000 people nationwide. The company owns and operates 20 short lines, and provides switching, mechanical, storage, trucking, warehousing and transload/intermodal services.
