Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Administrator Deputy Administrator for Operations Kathryn Waters recently resigned to accept a leadership position with the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

As APTA's Vice President - Member Services, Waters will oversee and direct staff support to all industry technical committees, development of transit industry standards, logistics support for association meetings and trade shows, membership development and retention, and all operations, safety and security activities. She also will direct APTA's International Outreach Program and trade development efforts, as well as the development of new products and services for APTA members.

Waters began her MTA career in 1980, where she served in various transit planning and management positions, rising to manager and chief operating officer of MTA's MARC commuter-rail service before joining Dallas Area Rapid Transit as vice president of commuter rail and railroad management in 2002. She returned to MTA in March to manage the authority's bus, Metro subway, light rail, MARC train, mobility and police functions.

"Since her return to the MTA, Kathy Waters has set a new standard of professionalism with her expertise, diligence and positive attitude," said Maryland Transportation Secretary John Porcari in a prepared statement. "MTA's loss is the national transit community's gain, and we wish her the best in her new role."
