Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Two months after opening, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) temporary World Trade Center Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) station already is hosting a record number of commuters, reclaiming its position as the system’s busiest station on weekdays.
Since Jan. 15, the station has averaged more than 30,000 daily commuters, and exceeded 30,000 commuters seven times between Jan. 20 and Jan. 30.
Prior to the station’s Nov. 23 opening, PANYNJ officials estimated 18,000 people would use the station daily. The authority originally predicted the PATH station would not reach pre-Sept. 11, 2001, user numbers for another two years, and would not become the system’s busiest weekday station until 2006.
The $2 billion World Trade Center Transportation Hub will feature a permanent PATH terminal, which is expected to open by 2006’s end.
