Last week, U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) named Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio) chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Subcommittee on Railroads. LaTourette previously chaired the Economic Development Subcommittee from 2001 to 2004.

"With freight transportation expected to increase dramatically in the next decade, we look forward to working with Congressman LaTourette to prepare our nation's transportation network for the challenges of today's global marketplace," said Association of American Railroads President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Hamberger in a prepared statement.

Earlier in the week, House leaders appointed Young to serve a third term as the committee's chairman.

"One of my primary goals is to pass a six-year highway and transit bill that adequately addresses our nation's crumbling infrastructure and increasing congestion crisis," said Young, adding that passage of the Rail Infrastructure Development and Expansion Act for the 21st Century (RIDE 21) is another high priority.

Young also named the following representatives to chair other subcommittees: John Mica (R-Fla.), aviation; Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.), Coast Guard and maritime transportation; Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), economic development, public buildings and emergency management; Tom Petri (R-Wis.), highways, transit and pipelines; and John Duncan (R-Tenn.), water resources and environment.
