Computerworld honors BNSF's fuel-saving efforts

BNSF Railway Co. recently received Computerworld magazine's 2008 21st Century Achievement Award, which recognizes the Class I's new fuel-saving program.

Introduced last year, the Fuel MVP Program rewards locomotive engineers who use fuel-efficient train-handling practices and measures their performance against a fuel-efficiency scorecard. Fuel-saving engineers receive gift cards for their efforts.

The program has helped BNSF — which last year used more than 1.4 billion gallons of diesel — cut fuel consumption by 1.5 percent in specific regions. The railroad expects the program to increase fuel efficiency by 1 percent system-wide after Fuel MVP is fully implemented.

"BNSF is creating an environment in which engineers strive for peak fuel conservation performance each month, with positive effects on both the BNSF bottom line and the global environment," said Jeff McIntyre, assistant vice president of technology services, in a prepared statement.
