Alabama, Virginia to provide grants for freight-rail projects, ASLRRA says

Alabama recently enacted a law that authorizes the Alabama Department of Transportation to administer a statewide funding program for short-line infrastructure rehabilitation and improvement projects, according to the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA).
Financial assistance is based on a state report listing short lines with project funding needs. The law also establishes the Short Line Railroad Infrastructure Rehabilitation Fund through which the Alabama DOT can issue grants and no-cost loans to local railroad authorities to rehabilitate short-line infrastructure.
The law was supported by the Alabama Railway Association, which was formed five years ago.
Meanwhile, the Virginia Department of Rail & Public Transportation (DRPT) is accepting applications through Feb.1, 2009, for rail, transit and transportation demand management grants for fiscal-year 2010, ASLRRA said. DRPT will provide grants through the Rail Enhancement & Preservation programs for freight- and passenger-rail initiatives. In addition, the department will provide funding to shippers for freight-rail access projects through the Rail Industrial Access Program.
