The Surface Transportation Board (STB) has granted final approval for Southwest Gulf Railroad Co. (SGR) to build and operate a seven-mile line in Medina County, Texas, subject to environmental mitigation conditions.The board identified three environmentally acceptable route alternatives – the eastern bypass, modified eastern bypass and MCEAA Medina Dam routes – any one of which SGR can choose.
The line will extend from a planned Vulcan Construction Material L.P. limestone quarry to a connection with a Union Pacific Railroad line near Dunlay, Texas. SGR will move limestone aggregate from the quarry to the eastern part of Texas, including the Houston area. The railroad expects to transport about 5 million tons of limestone annually.
