GE Lighting: LED retrofit for wayside incandescent replacements

GE Lighting now offers an LED retrofit for transit and railroad wayside incandescent replacement, helping to improve reliability, uptime and visibility in railway signal applications.

The LED replacement is a "pure" retrofit, meaning it can be installed in minutes without altering or replacing existing hardware, colored filters or inner lenses, according to GE Lighting. And by replacing multiple colored signals with a single white LED solution, module replacement becomes simpler, reducing the chance of color confusion and minimizing inventory costs and stock-keeping efforts.

"LED has several inherent advantages over incandescent bulbs for transit-signal applications," said Anik RoyTrudel, product manager for GE Lighting. "LEDs provide better uniformity of light, offering higher visibility in harsh conditions. The reliability of the LED bulb also offers extended life for less frequent replacement."

The LED replacement module can be pre-ordered in 120VAC and 12VAC. The patent-pending optical system for each module meets all pertinent standards, including: AREMA chromaticity and transmittance standards 7.1.10 when installed behind a US&S colored lens; FCC Class B electromagnetic compatibility; AREMA Class A mechanical vibration and shock; and IP55 design rating for protection from dust and moisture.

"Helping to reduce maintenance needs for transit and railway was a key driver in our development of an LED solution," said RoyTrudel. "Many of our customers are continually challenged to improve service levels, especially in transit where shutdowns mean major headaches for both operators and commuters. With an LED signal replacement, we can help them meet those challenges."
