Siemens: PTC systems solutions

Siemens applies industry-leading technology and engineering to a wide-range of on-board products and systems. Siemens' portfolio of solutions spans from train controls, on-board products, and on-board communication systems.

Applying its expertise, the company has made significant investments in developing positive train control (PTC) systems solutions and offering them to passenger, domestic and international freight railroads.

Siemens provides on-board PTC technology to U.S. passenger railroads operating on the Northeastern Corridor with its Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement Systems, a PTC-compliant technology that monitors speed and increases rail safety. This technology, overlaid on existing cab signal systems provides a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)-approved PTC-compliance solution that meets the federal mandate, according to Siemens.

In addition to its Trainguard Sentinel solution aimed for international markets, Siemens is introducing a new ITC-PTC compliant on-board system for U.S. freight railroads. It works in conjunction with freight railroads' existing radio and wayside infrastructure offering increased safety and additional functionality.

To further increase safety and performance, Siemens' PTC-controlled grade crossing solution implements communication between the on-board PTC unit and the grade crossing controller. This adds a secondary source for train detection, allowing a higher safety integrity level than traditional train detection technology.
