Rockwell Collins: ARINC RailwayNet

Rockwell Collins offers ARINC RailwayNet, a fully managed positive train control (PTC) network and messaging service for short-line, regional and commuter railroads. It was designed to increase safety and reliability in the rail industry by helping railroads meet the challenges associated with mandated PTC requirements.

ARINC RailwayNet creates a common communication infrastructure for all railroads by providing the network connections and office applications required to exchange critical information among Class I railroads and their partner short-line and commuter railroads.

As a shared network solution, ARINC RailwayNet provides connectivity for short line and commuter railroads with Class I railroads through a node developed for PTC on the Interoperable Train Control (ITC) Federated Network. RailwayNet uses VHF, cellular, Wi-Fi and MPLS technology to deliver messages from the back office to the locomotive and between operations.

The service is staffed with engineers experienced in PTC component development and system level testing, Rockwell Collins officials say. ARINC RailwayNet is an end-to-end solution that enables full back-office and interoffice messaging, security, data, and configuration management, as well as monitoring, diagnostics, and notifications. The service features dedicated redundant connections between customer facilities and the ARINC network operations center for host railroads, along with secure internet access to hosted database applications for tenant railroads.

ARINC RailwayNet provides a hosted service that minimizes the effort to implement back-office messaging and applications, including initializations and electronic delivery of mandatory directives. The Rockwell Collins' shared solution model reduces costs through economies of scale by leveraging the company's network operation centers. With RailwayNet, Rockwell Collins is helping short line and commuter railroads meet the PTC mandate efficiently, cost effectively and securely, according to the company.
