Plasser & Theurer: Universal two-sleeper tamping unit

In September, Plasser & Theurer will introduce "the smart machine," which is a universal two-sleeper tamping unit for tracks and turnouts. The unit combines the flexibility of universal one-sleeper tamping units in split-head design with the output of two-sleeper tamping operations, company officials said in a press release.

The product ensure that no sleepers are omitted or tamped twice unnecessarily, which saves time and allows "optimal accessibility" in all tamping zones, Plasser & Theurer officials said. In addition, speed control of the vibration drive of the tamping units reduces maintenance costs and helps save time by increasing output in encrusted ballast.

The company will unveil the unit at Innotrans 2016, which is slated to take place Sept. 20-23 in Berlin, Germany. At the outdoor exhibition grounds, Plasser & Theurer will display two other machines: the Unimat 09-32/4S Dynamic E3 tamping machine and the TIF tunnel inspection vehicle equipped with three cranes.
