Siemens: Locomotive Data Acquisition and Recording System

Siemens’ range of on-board products and communications systems have been used in freight- and transit-rail applications worldwide, according to the company.

The products include the Locomotive Data Acquisition and Recording System (LDARS), an event data acquisition processor and crashworthy memory module featuring an integrated or stand-alone Locomotive Digital Video Recorder supplied by Railhead Corp.

LDARS is based on a scalable and configurable on-board hardware/software platform, Siemens officials said. This flexibility offers railroads the ability to keep up with industry standards and their own maturing requirements while deploying positive train control, the officials added.

The platform also offers a sand-boxed application space designed to allow end-users to introduce their own logic to implement operational and business rules in revenue service.

All video and data that are collected belong to the end-user; however, "comprehensive" offline and back-office tools and services are available for easier data retrieval and analysis, Siemens officials said.
