VHB: PTC for MBTA

VHB has been named the local lead signal design consultant to work as part of the Ansaldo STS team on a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority $338 million project to equip the Boston commuter-rail network with positive train control (PTC).

The Ansaldo STS team submitted the best value bid with the highest technical rating to win the contract that includes surveying the existing signal system, signal design and contractor installation support, systems integration, commissioning, technical support and documentation. VHB’s work will encompass all 14 commuter rail lines and more than 400 route miles that operate in multiple states and portions of the high-speed Northeast Corridor (NEC) in Massachusetts.

PTC uses a combination of communication and vital railroad signal systems with crucial processors that support the train control system. This function (or capability) prevents train-to-train collisions, high-speed derailments, movements into work zone limits, and the movement of a train through a main line switch in the improper position.

"State and local governments recognize that transportation is essential to the nation’s economic growth and development. Our involvement in this important project further represents VHB's commitment to advanced technology in transportation and improving mobility in public transportation," said Terry Byrne, VHB's Transit and Rail Systems director. "VHB is proud to have been selected to lead major parts of this project for the MBTA."
