The new EMD SmartConsist™ Fuel Management System offers the ability to operate locomotives in consist at different throttle notches — improving fuel economy, cutting emissions, and reducing noise in the lead locomotive, the company says. SmartConsist is activated through the EM2000™ control system which continuously monitors and selects the most fuel efficient throttle combinations. It offers fuel savings ranging from 1-2 percent, the company says. SmartConsist can be applied to the in-service EMD locomotive fleet and trailing units can be of any vintage or manufacturer. Every facet of the system has been optimized for user convenience, simplifying system operation from installation to daily operation, the company says.
