GE Transportation

GE Transportation says it has been the market leader for diesel-electric locomotives for the past decade. Currently, it has more than 17,000 locomotives operating in 50 countries, pulling both freight and passengers. GE says its proven technology gives railroad customers clear productivity advantages. GE says it has invested more than $400 million and six years of research in the GE Evolution™ Series diesel locomotive, adding that the result is truly an “evolutionary” diesel locomotive platform — one that incorporates the best of existing, proven diesel locomotive engineering with new, advanced technologies that have, to-date, yielded more than $8 billion in orders. There are currently 3,700 Evolution Series locomotives operating worldwide. In addition to new locomotives, GE also provides locomotive modernizations to affordably upgrade older locomotives to improve availability, reliability and overall performance, the company says. GE has modernized more than 700 locomotives worldwide on more than 10 different platforms. Modernization can extend asset life by 15 years or more — all for roughly 50 percent of the cost of a new locomotive, the company says.
