These gondolas use an innovative formula for high-strength, lighter-weight steel developed by U. S. Steel, reducing each gondola’s unloaded weight by up to 15,000 pounds. This classic gondola design is ideal to transport loose bulk material such as metal scraps or steel slabs—while resisting load/unload damage. This railcar was designed as part of the joint initiative between USS, Norfolk Southern and Greenbrier, and earned the Progressive Railroading 2022 Reader’s Choice Award for Innovative Product and the Canadian Association of Railway Suppliers (CARS) 2022 Innovation Award.
