GATX specializes in four-axle locomotives. The company's primary model is the GP38-2, a unit which is relatively inexpensive to operate and easy to maintain. It is a 2,000-horsepower unit used both in general freight and switching service, equipped with a 16-645E roots blown engine, D77 traction motors and AR10 main generator. GATX also offers GP15-1s which are equipped with a 12-645E roots blown engine, suitable for switching and local freight service for industrial, Class I and short line customers. The SW1000/01 and SW1500s are primarily for industrial and yard switching applications. The SW1500 is a 1500 horsepower unit equipped with a roots-blown 12-645E engine, D77/78 traction motors and a D32 main generator. The SW1000/01s are 1000 horsepower units equipped with roots-blown 8-645E engine, D77/78 traction motors and D25 main generators.
