Republic Locomotive says it manufactures the only new industrial diesel-electric locomotive in North America. This locomotive, the RX500, uses a variable frequency AC traction drive designed to enable it to provide up to 100 percent greater adhesion than the old DC system, while virtually eliminating wheelsip, the company says. The RX500 locomotive is designed to be environmentally friendly with low emissions, quiet operation and low fuel consumption. Compared to older units, the RX500 has an estimated savings of one million gallons of fuel over the life of the locomotive, the company says.
