While use of infrared sensors in “hot box detectors” is common, IEM says it has advanced this technology through use of thermal imaging to detect such flaws as stuck brakes, partially applied brakes, bad wheel bearings, wheels not rotating properly, etc. IEM's Smart Infrared Inspection System (SIRIS) employs multiple thermal cameras to automatically capture images of passing trucks/bogies and applies a set of “smart” algorithms to automatically evaluate the condition of wheels, bearings, brake rigging and other axle and truck-mounted components, thereby improving reliability and reducing false-positives, the company says. Integrated within IEM's Wheel Inspection System Environment, the SIRIS module immediately reports faulty conditions.
