The Model 42 track undercutter utilizes a heavy-duty chain mounted on a 13-foot bar and a ditching wheel to cut and remove fouled ballast from switches and turnouts, road crossings, bridge approaches, fouled track sections, section platforms and other areas where physical obstructions prohibit standard undercutters. The unit has the capability of undercutting the track without raising or lifting ahead of the machine. This on-track machine undercuts the track by means of a hydrostatically driven endless cutter chain equipped with cutting and raking teeth. It undercuts from 6 inches to 9 inches below the bottom of the ties. It is capable of undercutting track at a rate of 150 feet per hour. The fouled ballast can be loaded in air dump cars or wasted 30 feet from the center of the track.
